Turning a corner… at full speed.

Turning a corner… at full speed. That’s what it felt like when I got the news this morning that Terran would be transferring to Seattle Children’s Hospital tomorrow. Yesterday we were still waiting on a date and everyone thought it would be at least a week, maybe two. Terran just got his replogle taken out this morning (for the second time) and we’re still monitoring how he does without it (two vomits so far; one decent size, one tiny). It seems like a weird time to move him… When I expressed those feelings to the attending doctor, they assured me that the transfer wouldn’t impact Terran’s monitoring and that [voice goes quite] “he’s in better hands there.” She means that Children’s Short Gut program is well renowned and they have expertise that Swedish doesn’t. Now that he’s not at risk of going back to surgery, it’s best to get him over there as soon as possible.

I’m ecstatic that Terran is one step closer to coming home and that Walker and I get to finally see what his home TPN care is going to look like! We have so many questions that have been answered so far with “that’s a question for Children’s.” While I’m excited to take this next step, I’m also nervous because no one has been able to tell us what to expect at Children’s… we don’t know when they’ll pick him up, we don’t know if we can ride in the AMR, we’re don’t know if the one-parent-at-a-time COVID rule is still hospital protocol, we don’t know how long he’ll be there or what they plan to do other than teach us about his home TPN. Will they surgical insert something other than his current PICC line like the rumored Broviac? Will they wait to start his feeding program before discharging him? Apparently we’ll just find out when we get there…

Today is Terran’s 3-week birthday (hooray!!) so I made chocolate chip cookies for the NICU team. Walker ate 3 cookies before I left this morning so they must’ve been good lol. Being Terran’s potential last day, it was really nice to see a couple of our favorite nurses (everyone is stellar, but few stand out). The special nurses clearly care for their babies and families, they anticipate needs, and they create bonds that make being in the NICU a little less scary. Shout out to the Swedish NICU nursing staff ~ especially L & S (you know who you are!) ~ thank you for being a part of our journey and for caring for our boy. We’re forever grateful.

  6. Way to go, Terran! If the premier hospital that provides specialized top notch treatment gives a go for Terran’s transfer, he must be ready. Terran is going to be in good hands, mommy.❤️

  8. WOW…you mean it when you say “…full speed ahead!” It sounds like you are going to the very best place possible and that is wonderful! I’m right there with you with all the questions, but it sounds like they are the very best team from which to get all of your answers. Three weeks already and Terran has hit so many milestones…what a strong, goal-oriented family. Terran’s ready — hold on tight!

  9. Another milestone! Terran (and his parents) is proving to be a real trooper! Sure this transfer will be another hurdle but all in the right direction and hopefully a short time before ‘HOMECOMING’ A real challenge but one that, I’m convinced you will overcome, as you have with so many already. Prayers continue! Much love and admiration,
    Gramma Goodwin
