Terran is one week old today!!

I brought in cookies for the nurses to celebrate. It’s hard to describe how amazing they are. Each one has a slightly different way of doing things, and we learn something new from each one. Of course it’d be better to not have to be in the NICU at all, but while we’re here, might as well learn tricks from the experts! If we were home, we’d be second-guessing everything we were doing. In the NICU, we just turn to the nurse and ask. We have a different nurse every 1-4 days depending on their schedule and each time I’m sad to see them go and convinced the next one couldn’t possibly fill their shoes. And then I end up liking them just as much. It’s a strange situation to be so open and close with someone for such a short period of time.

Beyond the nurses, the rest of the care team is exceptional as well. In morning rounds, the ARNPs and surgeons speak directly to me, making sure I understand the medical jargon and answering all my questions. If they don’t feel like they can satisfactorily answer my questions, they go find the person who can and send them to Terran’s bedside to talk to me. We’re even invited to set up “care conferences” where Terran’s main medical team all meet with us together and talk about his care plan. We feel completely supported. They think of things before we even ask and make everything as easy as possible so we can focus on Terran.
