Surgery update

Quick update on Terran’s recent central line surgery: Everything went well and we’re all home now. The surgeon was unable to use the same path (subclavian vein) but successfully inserted a line through the jugular vein. That was the path the original surgeon tried to use, so really his current line is in a more “ideal” location (#win). Unfortunately, Terran isn’t big enough for the larger size catheter (he’s only 6 kilos, needs to be 10 kilos to qualify) so we’re stuck with the same (weakest) line for now. The surgeon did think ahead to place the end point a little farther down so he has some “room to grow”. The entry point sits a little higher on his chest so keeping drool off the dressing is a little more challenging but not impossible. Terran bled more this time than last time, requiring two dressing changes. The bleeding stopped after some added pressure and elevated snuggle napping so we’re good there. Typically, we wait 2 days before attempting a dressing change to allow the area a chance to begin healing (look at me – saying “typically” in reference to pediatric surgery – good grief). One reason for more blood and bruising this time around is from the additional trauma of removing the original line. Terran doesn’t seem to mind though! We were expecting a tired, post-general anesthesia baby when he returned from surgery but he was awake, laughing, and totally engaged! He had more solid naps for the first couple days, but other than that you’d never know he just went through surgery. The worst thing for him right now is his first tooth coming in! We’re in post-surgery-caution right now, which means no pressure on that area, careful lifting and holding, and 3,000 x attention to the line. Terran is definitely enjoying the break from tummy time 🙂

Although his line is on the smaller end of things, the placement and thinking ahead to his growth are positives. I’m so glad that Terran seems content to take on all the hard things at such a young age…with his, “This is easy…” attitude he’ll never have a hard day in his life–we all should adopt that attitude! Way to teach us all, Terran!
